Heel Pain in Children
Dale Buranosky, DPM
Children’s activity levels usually increase over the summer. Various sporting camps take place in preparation for the start of a new school year. This is also a time of year when many parents hear their children complain of heel pain. The pain is often worse after increased activity level and better with rest. There is usually no injury involved. Heel pain in children is common. The heel is an area where new bone is forming at the growth plate until about age 14. The growth plate is a weak area. The increased activity from running and jumping can cause injury to this fragile area. The most common cause of heel pain is inflammation to the growth plate due to muscle strain and repetitive stress. Usual treatment for this is rest, ice, heel cushions, good supportive shoes. Heel pain can be due to other causes as well including fractures. Because there are many causes of heel pain, it is important that parents have their child examined. |
