Broken Toes

Dale J Buranosky, DPM
Toe injuries are extremely common. If we could eliminate bed-posts and door jams from the world, we could significantly reduce the number of broken toes. Too often I hear my patients say that nothing can be done for a broken toe. This is not the case. If a broken toe goes untreated or is treated improperly, complications can occur. Broken bones can displace, leaving the toe in a mal-aligned position. This can cause pain, particularly with shoe wear. This may lead to a corn or callus. A break involving a joint may result in joint pain and arthritis. Signs of a fracture often include pain, swelling, bruising, or abnormal appearance. Treatment most often includes splinting, icing, and a stiff-soled surgical shoe. Occasionally a displaced bone may require straightening (“reduction” or “setting”) or surgical pinning. Fractured toes require proper treatment. If left unattended, problems may arise. |
