Achilles Tendon Injuries
Troy Karlsson, M.D.

Pain in the back of the ankle, just above the heel, is usually a sign of an irritated Achilles tendon. While this tendon is extremely strong, it is prone to injury due to its heavy workload. Consider that it transmits virtually all of the force necessary to propel you forward, off your toes, with each step.

Sudden changes in activity levels can trigger a nagging ache that tends to be worse in the morning and with climbing stairs. Treatment usually includes icing, stretching, heel lifts and decreased activity. Extreme cases lead to a complete tear of the tendon, usually felt as a sudden “pop” experienced during sports activities.

Persistent tendonitis, or a torn tendon, may require surgical treatment. Proper stretching before activities can help minimize the chance of these problems.
