Mini-Incision Total Hip Replacement
Andrew Kim, M.D.

Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure that involves replacement of worn-out parts of a person's joint with a new artificial joint. This artificial joint is made from metal and special plastic called polyethylene. Recent advances in technology and surgical techniques have made joint replacement surgery a very common and safe surgery with excellent outcomes. There are more than half a million total joint replacement surgeries the United States each year. Total joint replacement is indicated in advanced stages of arthritis when all other treatment options have been exhausted. When pain and disability from arthritis interferes with one's quality of life or threatens one’s independence, it's time to consider total joint replacement.

So what is mini-incision total hip replacement? Mini-incision total hip replacement, the latest advance in surgical technique, is a total hip replacement surgery through a much smaller exposure. Most surgeons prefer a conventional 8 to 12 inch incision for ease of viewing. This conventional exposure involves extensive muscle disruption. The advantage of mini-incision total hip replacement is that this new technique accomplishes the same goal with much smaller incision and less muscle disruption. Less soft tissue disruption can potentially help the patient recover faster. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, and with proper patient selection, this surgery can be performed efficiently and safely.
