E. Thomas Marquardt, M.D.
Minimally Invasive-Quad Sparing Knee Replacement is an exciting development in knee replacement because it is less intrusive to the patient, can reduce scarring, and may contribute to a quicker recovery time. Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) has revolutionized procedures such as gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and cardiac bypass surgery. Approximately 500,000 Americans receive knee or hip implants each year to help relieve the debilitating pain of severe osteoarthritis. This number is expected to increase as Baby Boomers age. Traditional knee replacement surgery requires an incision of up to 12 inches in the knee. Minimally Invasive Quad-Sparing procedures can reduce these incisions by one-half to two-thirds the size, thus sparing the quadriceps muscle. Minimally Invasive Surgery requires special surgical instrumentation and a highly skilled surgeon. Several physicians at M&M Orthopaedics are specially trained in this procedure, and are now accepting consultations for this procedure. |
