Jennifer Johnson, PA-C
Back pain is common during pregnancy. Ninety percent of all pregnant women will have back pain during their pregnancy. The likelihood of having back pain increases with the number of pregnancies and the age of the mother. Pregnancy-related pain may be caused by fatigue, weight gain, hormonal changes, and changes in circulation and posture. Improper lifting techniques, prolonged standing without changing position, and inability to allow rest between activities are contributing factors. Correcting these problems as well as entering a pregnancy with a good level of general fitness will help. If back pain does develop during pregnancy, there are several different way to manage that pain. Sitting and lying with support should help. Cool water exercise encourages physical fitness and can reduce the intensity of the pain. The use of hot and cold packs may also help, as can Physical Therapy. If back pain during pregnancy is severe and is not relieved with changes in position or rest, it is very important to contact your health care provider to rule out more serious causes. Back pain during pregnancy is common, but these simple measures should help. |
